Nepal began its formal diplomatic contacts with the then West Pakistan in 1967 by establishing a Consulate General’s Office in Dhaka, capital of West Pakistan. The first Consul General of Nepal was Mr. Laxman Bahadur Singh who was succeeded by Mr. Madhav Kumar Rimal and Mrs. Bindeshowri Shah respectively. Nepal opened its full fledged diplomatic mission in Dhaka, Bangladesh in 1976.

The following distinguished persons have served as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Nepal to Bangladesh:

1.  H. E. Mr. Harka Bahadur Thapa (1976 – 1982)

2.  H. E. Mr. Gahendra Bahadur Rajbhandari (1982 – 1987)

3.  H. E. Mr. Mohan Prasad Lohani (1987 – 1991)

4.  H. E. Mr. Lok Bahadur Shrestha (1992 – 1998)

5.  H. E. Mr. Madhu Raman Acharya (1998 – October 2001)

6.  H. E. Mr. Bhagirath Basnet (Mrach 2003 – June 2006)

H. E. Pradeep Khatiwada is currently serving as the Ambassador of Nepal to Bangladesh from November, 2007.

The Embassy of Nepal had its chancery building in Dhanmondi till 1983 and moved to its new building in 1985 in Baridhara Diplomatic Enclave with its own unique design and architecture portraying the pagoda style of Nepal.

The then King Birendra had inaugurated the Chancery Building in 1985. All the wooden works–windows and doors–were imported from Nepal to give the building a touch of Nepali architecture. It has remained one of the best kept Nepalese missions anywhere in the world.

The Nepalese Embassy complex comprises of Ambassador’s residence, staff complex and local staff quarters with sprawling garden. A Pashupatinath temple has also been built inside the compound with the cooperation of Nepalese community in Dhaka in 1999.
